What is a Gunite Pool?

A gunite swimming pool is a type of swimming pool that's built by spraying a mixture of concrete (Shotcrete) and sand through a hose onto a framework of steel rebar. This process allows for great flexibility in design, as the pool can be customized into various shapes and sizes to fit your preferences and the layout of your backyard. Once the concrete mixture is applied and shaped, it's left to cure and harden, resulting in a durable and long-lasting pool structure. Gunite pools are a more expensive option than vinyl pools but are known for their strength and resilience.

What are the benefits of owning a gunite swimming pool?

Gunite pools are a popular choice among homeowners who want a customizable and enduring swimming pool for their property. Benefits include:

  • Customizable Design: If you opt for a gunite in-ground pool, you will be able to choose from a variety of finishes during the installation process to create exactly the look you want. Unlike prefabricated pools, gunite pools are built on-site, allowing for flexibility in shape, size, and layout. Whether you dream of a sleek, modern pool or a natural oasis with waterfalls and rock formations, a gunite pool can be tailored to bring your vision to life.
  • Durable Construction: Made from a mixture of concrete and sand, sprayed onto a steel rebar framework, gunite pools are known for their strength and longevity. This robust construction ensures that your pool can withstand the test of time, resisting damage from environmental factors like shifting soil or harsh weather conditions. With proper maintenance, a gunite pool can provide years of enjoyment for you and your family, making it a worthwhile investment.
  • Versatile Finish Options: From smooth plaster finishes to textured combinations, you can choose a surface that suits your preferences for appearance and feel. Various color choices allow you to customize the look of your pool, whether you prefer a classic blue hue or a more interesting shade. The plaster finish of a gunite pool will typically include tiny, colored quartz pebbles that provide a shimmery, elegant look through the water. Beyond aesthetics, different finish options can also affect the pool's grip and durability, providing versatility to meet your specific needs and preferences.

How do I care for a gunite swimming pool?

  • Regular Cleaning: Maintain a regular cleaning schedule. This includes skimming the surface to remove leaves, debris, and insects, as well as vacuuming the pool floor and walls to eliminate dirt and algae buildup. Additionally, brushing the pool walls and tiles helps prevent algae growth and keeps the surface clean and smooth.
  • Monitoring Chemical Levels: Properly balancing the chemical levels in your gunite pool is crucial for water clarity, sanitation, and swimmer comfort. All Seasons Pools & Spas can test your water regularly to measure pH, chlorine, alkalinity, and calcium hardness levels. We can adjust these levels as needed to maintain optimal water balance and prevent problems such as algae growth, cloudy water, or skin and eye irritation.
  •  Routine Maintenance Checks: Regularly inspecting your gunite pool for signs of wear, damage, or leaks is another important aspect of pool care. Check the pool equipment, including pumps, filters, and heaters, for any issues or unusual noises that may indicate a problem. Inspect the pool structure, including the walls, floor, and tile, for cracks, chips, or other damage that could compromise the integrity of the pool. If you spot any issues or have any concerns, contact us for help or questions.

The Gunite Pool Process

If a custom, gunite pool is your choice, we will follow the process below to ensure we deliver exactly what you’re looking for.

  1. Interview. We will gather information about what you’re looking for in a pool.
  2. Site Evaluation. Here we come to your home and look at the elevation and access of the property. We also take pictures and measurements of your home and backyard.
  3. 3D Design. We take the site evaluation information and with our 3-D Virtual Design Software we draw your home, backyard and pool. With this 3D technology, we can show you what your pool and backyard will look like before a shovel ever hits the ground. At this point, you can add features and/or make any changes desired.
  4. Final Approvals. Once you approve your design, we send the information to the construction department. They properly engineer pipe, filter, and pump sizes to maximize water flow and circulation of the water. They also look at the elevation of your property and the dimensions of the pool. On to the build!

The Gunite Construction Process

The construction of gunite pools starts with designing the pool and excavating the site. A framework of steel rods (rebar) is then installed for reinforcement, followed by the installation of plumbing and electrical systems. Gunite, a mix of cement, gravel, and water, is sprayed over the rebar to form the pool's shell. This is then smoothed and shaped, with the final step being the curing of the gunite, a process that ensures the pool's structural integrity and durability.
